Shopping During a Crisis

March 18, 2020

Technically it was Jodie’s turn to do the shopping this weekend, but being as she often calls me the apocalypse shopper, I volunteered to go instead. I tend to buy more than she does so it’s a running joke between us. This time it didn’t feel like a joke with how empty the shelves were.

For us the groceries are about 1/2 an hour away. While driving there, it occurred to me that we have neighbors who should not be going out. I asked Jodie to contact our neighbor friend Carol. She is about 75ish and her husband is about to start chemo for prostate cancer. All this sweetheart asked for was a six pack of any blue Gatorade for her bedridden husband.

It took me going to four different stores to find everything my own household needed. Not for hoarding, but just for the next week or two. The Gatorade? I got lucky and the supplier was there restocking the shelves, with, wait for it, blue Gatorades! Yay!

My hands were raw from the amount of hand sanitizer I slathered myself in during my shopping foray, but I returned home triumphant, and hopefully virus free.

Carol insisted on paying me for it, and I told her that when I run out of hand sanitizer while shopping for our elderly neighbors, she could pay me back with a bottle of that precious CostCo sized hand sanitizer from that four pack she was bragging about.

Don’t let social distancing limit your humanity.
